“The Unpaid Rent Dilemma: A Family’s Struggle to Set Boundaries”

Check out this letter we received from a 47-year-old woman about her family drama. She’s worried sick about her husband’s negative reaction to how she treats their daughters. Here’s the deal: she’s not pushing their adult daughters to pay rent while they’re living at home. But her husband isn’t too happy about it, and it’s really getting to her.
The woman has her own view towards her daughters’ accommodation.

Stella, who’s 47, reached out to our readers for advice on her family situation. She feels like she’s doing everything right, but her husband disagrees, and it’s causing chaos at home.

In her letter, Stella explains, “I have two daughters, aged 20 and 21, still living with us. They work part-time and are in college. Both girls are full-time students. My stance on them living at home has always been firm: as long as they’re in school, they don’t have to pay rent. They contribute a lot around the house, helping with chores and looking after their younger siblings. I’m happy with how things are going in our family. But my husband keeps stirring the pot.”

The woman’s husband is against this family arrangement and doesn’t hesitate to speak up.

Stella adds, “My husband has always been civil with my daughters, though their bond isn’t exactly warm. He’s treated them fairly, like his own, but he’s big on them being independent.”

“But here’s the rub: he thinks they should pay rent and pitch in more. He even says they’re taking advantage of me. I don’t agree. Our differing opinions have led to a ton of arguments, making our home feel tense. It’s getting to the point where I can barely handle the stress.”

Stella’s husband acts in a very tough way now.

Stella’s story takes a dramatic turn. She reveals, “My husband has been laying into my daughters, comparing them to parasites sucking the life out of a tree without giving anything back. It really hurt them, though they didn’t make a scene. But I can sense their growing resentment towards him.”

“Not long after, he dropped another bombshell: he’s refusing to chip in for household expenses anymore. His reason? He says it’s my house and my bills since I owned it before we got married. He also argues that since my daughters don’t pay rent, why should he? He’s handling all the outdoor maintenance and DIY upgrades inside, so I’ve let it slide, for now.”

Stella is on the crossroads now and really doesn’t know what to do.

The woman expressed, “I used to believe our relationship was solid and mature. We respected each other and kept things drama-free. But now, everything’s turned upside down. What’s really getting to me is that nobody’s getting a say. It’s all ultimatums and no compromise, and it’s driving me crazy.”
